Connor McDavid drives Edmonton with Hat Trick

Connor McDavid had three goals and an assist and the Edmonton Oilers overcame an early 3-0 deficit to beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Leon Draisaitl added a goal and two assists and Darnell Nurse also scored for the Oilers in the opener for both teams. Jack Campbell made 33 saves.

"It wasn't according to anyone's script, for sure," said Edmonton head coach Jay Woodcroft. "I don't think we were sharp. I don't think we were in sync early. We found a way to win the game, that's a really good sign, but we can be better."

Carlos Correa looking to test free agency

Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa is planning to opt out of the final two years and approximately $70 million remaining on his contract and test free agency this offseason.

"With the year that I have had, my health and my being at the best moment of my career at 28, that is the right decision," Correa told Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, according to ESPN.

Braves tie the series vs. Phillies

This was a game the Atlanta Braves absolutely had to win.

They had the right guy on the mound.

Kyle Wright, baseball's only 20-game winner, threw six brilliant innings to outduel Zack Wheeler as the Braves evened their NL Division Series at one game apiece, blanking the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Padres tie the series vs. Dodgers

Not many tabbed the San Diego Padres to beat the Mets in New York in the wild-card round. Even fewer picked them against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have dominated the Padres in recent years and were baseball's best team during the regular season.

But they're all even now.

Manny Machado homered early and added an RBI double off Clayton Kershaw, and Jurickson Profar singled home the go-ahead run as San Diego defeated the Dodgers 5-3 on Wednesday to tie their NL Division Series at one game apiece.

Maple Leafs blow up vs. Montreal

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe was not thrilled with his team's performance in a season-opening loss against the rival Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Although the Leafs only held one lead in the game after Michael Bunting opened the scoring, they allowed two goals in the final three minutes, including the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining. 

Keefe was particularly upset with his club's defensive play.

Phillies vs. Braves Game 2 Rain Delay

The start of Wednesday's Game 2 of the NL Division Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves has been delayed by rain.

Major League Baseball will determine whether the game can be played. 

"I think general consensus is that we will not start a game unless we feel like we can finish it," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. "We're not looking for delays. I don't think anybody is — the Braves, us, Major League Baseball. If there's a window there, we'll go."

Sabres sign Samuelsson

The Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday that they signed defenseman Mattias Samuelsson to a seven-year extension that carries an average annual value of $4.29 million.

Samuelsson tallied 10 points in 42 games with the Sabres last season. The 22-year-old has one year remaining on his entry-level contract.

The long-term pact comes very early in Samuelsson's NHL career. The blue-liner has just 54 games of experience and has yet to score a goal.

Tua Tagovailoa returns to practice

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will return to the field and throw Wednesday as part of his progression through concussion protocol, head coach Mike McDaniel announced, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques.

McDaniel added that Tagovailoa won't play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Davante Adams charged with assault

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams was charged with misdemeanor assault for a postgame incident on Monday Night Football in Kansas City, according to court records obtained by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Adams shoved a photographer to the ground on his way to the locker room following the team's 30-29 loss to the Chiefs. He apologized for the incident afterward.

The photographer filed a police report against the 29-year-old on Tuesday.

Draymond Green fined for punching Jordan Poole

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been fined but won't be suspended for punching teammate Jordan Poole in practice last week, head coach Steve Kerr told reporters late Tuesday night.

Green is expected to take part in the team's final preseason game on Friday and suit up to begin the regular season.

The former Defensive Player of the Year struck Poole last Wednesday, and video of the incident was leaked on Friday. Green then announced he would take time away from the team while he continued to work on himself and give his teammates space.
