Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías pleaded no contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic battery on Wednesday.
According to court records, four other misdemeanor charges against Urías were dropped. Urias had also been facing one count of spousal battery, one count of domestic battery involving a dating relationship, one count of false imprisonment and one count of assault. All the charges stemmed from his arrest in September on suspicion of domestic violence.
Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said Thursday he feels “really good” that he will reach a new contract with the team, mirroring optimism from president and general manager Don Waddell a day earlier.

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews won't play in Thursday's Game 6 against the Boston Bruins, head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed.
Matthews missed the third period of Game 4 and all of Game 5 due to an illness. He's also dealing with an apparent injury suffered on an innocuous hit in the series, per The Athletic's Chris Johnston, whose sources added that it would be "reckless" for Matthews to try to play through the ailment.
It's uncertain if Matthews could play in a potential Game 7, though one source told Johnston it's unlikely.
Holding out was seemingly never an option for Travis Kelce as the All-Pro tight end sought a pay raise.
The Chiefs recently granted Kelce's wishes by reworking his deal, but the nine-time Pro Bowler said he wasn't going to threaten a holdout if Kansas City didn't meet his contract demands.

The New England Patriots drafted Drake Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and veteran Jacoby Brissett is ready to compete with the rookie quarterback for the team's starting role.
"I'm excited to have him on the team, and the other guys as well that we drafted and picked up. I think it's going to be good," Brissett said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper owned up Wednesday for remarks he made following the club's elimination from the playoffs.

Mikko Rantanen scored twice in the third period as the Colorado Avalanche won 6-3 in Tuesday's Game 5 to eliminate the Winnipeg Jets.
