Ranger Suarez career high 11 strikeouts

Ranger Suárez struck out a career-high 11 in seven shutout innings and backup catcher Rafael Marchán provided all the offense for Philadelphia with three RBIs and the Phillies held on for a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.

The Phillies have won six of seven and have a seven-game lead over the New York Mets in the NL East heading into their three-game series at Citi Field beginning Monday night.

Suarez (10-6) allowed only three hits. It was his second consecutive game with double-digit strikeouts after getting 10 against Seattle last week.

Tommy Fleetwood wins 2025 FedEx Cup

Tommy Fleetwood captured his long-awaited first PGA TOUR victory Sunday at the TOUR Championship, securing the FedEx Cup as the 2025 playoff champion.

Fleetwood fired a final-round 68 to seal the win at 18-under to overcome a star-studded field at East Lake to end the 2025 regular season. The Englishman had six runners-up and 30 top-five finishes in his PGA TOUR career before Sunday's breakthrough.

Christiano Ronaldo makes history

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 competitive goals for four different clubs on Saturday, though Al-Nassr lost to Al-Ahli in a penalty shootout after the Saudi Super Cup final ended 2-2.

The first half strike at Hong Kong Stadium took the 40-year-old to his century for the Saudi Arabian club, which he joined in Dec. 2022.

It adds to his 450 goals for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United and 101 for Juventus and moves Ronaldo ahead of the three players who had scored 100 times for three clubs: Isidro Langara, who played in Spain from 1930 to 1948, as well as Brazilian stars Romario and Neymar.

Zack Wheeler out 6-8 months with blood clot

Philadelphia Phillies starter Zack Wheeler was recommended to undergo thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks and will miss the remainder of the 2025 season, the team announced Saturday.

He's expected to undergo the procedure in the next few weeks.

Wheeler had a procedure to remove a blood clot in his right arm earlier this week. After follow-up exams, he was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome, which requires a different surgery to fix. The recovery time from his upcoming procedure is around six-to-eight months.

Shane Bieber dominates his debut

Shane Bieber struck out nine over six dominant innings of one-run ball in his debut with the Blue Jays on Friday night, helping Toronto beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 after 16 months away from the mound.

"Today, it was all gratitude for what's been a long road for my family and my support team that keep me going every day," Bieber said. "Just awesome to share this moment with them."

It was Bieber's first major league appearance since April 2, 2024, when he experienced elbow discomfort and subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery.

Kaleb McGary out with leg injury

Atlanta Falcons right tackle Kaleb McGary will miss significant time and is headed to injured reserve after getting carted off at practice this week with a lower left leg injury, coach Raheem Morris said Friday night.

Morris said he didn't have any other details on McGary's injury. The club had said the seventh-year pro would undergo an MRI.

"He'll miss significant time," Morris said after the Falcons' 31-13 loss in their preseason finale at the Dallas Cowboys. "Obviously, it looks like an IR, whatever the case may be. I don't know all the details of it."

Derrick Harmon out with MCL sprain

Pittsburgh Steelers' first-round pick Derrick Harmon is expected to be sidelined for about a month with an MCL sprain, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The injury makes the defensive tackle a candidate to begin the season on injured reserve, Rapoport adds.

Harmon suffered the injury during the team's final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night. He was carted to the locker room after his knee twisted awkwardly on a pass-rush snap. However, he later returned to the sideline in street clothes.

Shawn Kemp sentenced to home monitoring

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp was sentenced Friday to 30 days of electronic home monitoring for shooting at two men inside a vehicle in a Washington state mall parking lot. 

Kemp must begin home monitoring within two weeks, The Seattle Times reported. He must also serve one year of state Department of Corrections supervision and complete 240 hours of community service. 

Prosecutors had recommended the six-time NBA All-Star be sentenced to nine months in jail, a year of supervision and pay restitution.

Baltimore Orioles sign Samuel Basallo

The Baltimore Orioles and top catching prospect Samuel Basallo are finalizing an eight-year, $67-million contract extension, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Basallo's deal, which will be the largest pre-arbitration extension for a catcher, will start next season and can max out at $88.5 million with performance bonuses and escalators, according to Passan.

The pact also includes a 2034 option, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The 21-year-old has played in just four games after making his MLB debut Sunday. He's gone 4-for-14 with five RBIs since getting promoted but hit 23 homers with 67 RBIs and a .966 OPS over 76 contests in Triple-A this season.

Basallo's reported deal is also interesting considering the Orioles already have Adley Rutschman as their starting catcher. The 27-year-old two-time All-Star has struggled during an injury-plagued 2025 campaign but is arbitration-eligible through 2027.

Carolina Panthers sign Taylor Moton

Taylor Moton is staying in Carolina.

The Panthers announced Friday they've given their durable longtime right tackle a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2027 season.

Moton will make $44 million over the next two year including $40 million in guaranteed money, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team typically does not release financial details of contracts.
