McCaffrey lands on injured reserve

San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey was added to the team's injury report with a calf injury three days before the season opener.

McCaffrey was listed as limited at practice on Thursday with the injury after he had no disclosed health issues for all of training camp following an injury-plagued 2024 season.

McCaffrey missed almost all of training camp last season with what the team initially called a calf injury but was expected to be ready for the start of the season. But McCaffrey was a late scratch for that game with bilateral Achilles tendinitis.

Jalen Carter ejected for spitting on Prescott

Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter was ejected from Thursday's season opener against the Cowboys after spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott before the game's first play from scrimmage.

Prescott and Carter appeared to exchange words coming out of the huddle before the Eagles star spat on the Cowboys passer in front of the referee. The official immediately threw the flag for unsportsmanlike conduct and ejected Carter.

Junior Caminero hits 40th HR

Junior Caminero hit his 40th homer and drove in four runs to reach 100 RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays held on to beat Cal Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Raleigh hit his 51st homer, extending his major league record for home runs by a catcher, but he popped out with two men on base to end the game against Garrett Cleavinger, who earned his second save.

Caminero, who turned 22 in July, had an RBI single in the first inning, went deep in the sixth against Bryan Woo to tie the game at 3-all, and got to 100 RBIs with a two-run double in the seventh off Gabe Speier (2-2) that made it 6-4. He became the fourth player in major league history to hit at least 40 homers in his age-21 season or younger, joining Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews and Ronald Acuña Jr.

Taylor Swift for Super Bowl LX Halftime

There's a chance Taylor Swift could perform at the Super Bowl LX halftime show, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

"We would always love to have Taylor play," Goodell told the "Today" show Wednesday. "She is a special, special talent, and obviously she would be welcome at any time."

After host Savannah Guthrie asked him if a deal with the superstar singer was in the works, Goodell said he couldn't divulge anything. However, when asked if it was a maybe, he responded, "It's a maybe."

Leafs look to lock up Anthony Stolarz

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is in the preliminary stages of working out a contract extension for goaltender Anthony Stolarz.

"We've certainly explored some things with Anthony and his representative, and we'd love to find a way to get something done," Treliving told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun on Tuesday. "If there's something that both sides are comfortable with, we'll look at it. And we've been in those discussions for some time right now. We'll see what the coming days bring."

Stolarz is entering the final season of the two-year, $5-million contract he signed with Toronto in 2024 and is eligible to ink an extension at any point. The 31-year-old was phenomenal in his first campaign with the Maple Leafs, going 21-8-3 with four shutouts, a .926 save percentage, and 31.2 goals saved above expected.

Bucs sign Luke Goedeke to $90M

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing offensive tackle Luke Goedeke to a four-year, $90-million extension with $50 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

Goedeke has been Tampa Bay's primary starting right tackle for the last three years. He was selected in the second round of the 2022 draft and has appeared in 41 games, including 38 starts.

The 26-year-old allowed three sacks and 17 pressures in 542 pass-blocking snaps in 2024, according to PFF. Goedeke has only surrendered 10 sacks throughout his career.

The Buccaneers will kick off their season Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

CeeDee Lamb has weird motivation

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb told reporters that he's going to watch the Philadelphia Eagles' Super Bowl banner ceremony before the teams face off Thursday.

"Motivation," Lamb said Sunday when asked why he wants to observe the pregame celebration.

He added, "Shoutout to them (the Eagles) for that ... cause I still got brothers over there. It's not really anything personal, but it's something that I'm chasing."

Giants & Rockies clear the benches

San Francisco Giants first baseman Rafael Devers sparked a benches-clearing fracas with a home run during the first inning of Tuesday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Devers and Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland engaged in a heated verbal exchange after the slugger admired the long blast, leading players from both teams to rush the field.

Freeland, Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames were ejected because of the tussle.

Devers, meanwhile, remained in the game to play third base.

The Giants and Rockies will conclude their three-game series Wednesday.

Jason Adam down with quadricep injury

Padres reliever Jason Adam ruptured a tendon in his left quadriceps and was carted off the field Monday, a major blow to San Diego's dominant bullpen.

Adam was injured in the seventh inning of a 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. One of several All-Star relievers on the team, Adam said he still needs to get an MRI for confirmation "but that sounds like six to nine months, so the season's probably done."

The injury comes as the Padres are chasing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The loss dropped the Padres 2 1/2 games behind the idle Dodgers. San Diego currently holds the second National League wild-card spot.

Rangers rally to win 6th straight

Alejandro Osuna hit a two-run single in the 10th inning, Jake Burger had a crucial RBI triple in his return from the injured list and the Texas Rangers rallied past the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 on Monday for their sixth straight victory.

The Rangers had runners on second and third with two outs in the 10th when Osuna — hitting .149 in 87 at-bats this season — ripped a line drive that caromed off reliever Juan Burgos (1-1) into foul territory. Michael Helman crossed the plate easily and then Ezequiel Duran scored all the way from second, sliding under Gabriel Moreno's tag.
