Rob Manfred looking to expand MLB

Commissioner Rob Manfred believes Major League Baseball could look very different in the future. 

Manfred was candid when asked about potential expansion in the upcoming years during ESPN's broadcast of the Little League Classic on Sunday.

"I think the first two topics (expansion and realignment) are related in my mind," Manfred said. "I think if we expand, it provides us with an opportunity to geographically realign. I think we could save a lot of wear and tear on our players in terms of travel, and I think our postseason format would be even more appealing for entities like ESPN."

Scottie Scheffler wins BMW Championship

The numbers Scottie Scheffler is compiling have been drawing comparisons with Tiger Woods. The world's No. 1 player had a Tiger-like moment with the trophy on the line and a club in his hand Sunday in the BMW Championship.

His 82-foot chip on the 17th — the hardest hole in the final round at Caves Valley — landed about 60 feet short and rolled the rest of the way, picking up speed, losing speed dropping on the final turn. The birdie all but wrapped up another win, his fifth PGA Tour title this year.

Eagles acquire John Metchie

The Houston Texans are trading wide receiver John Metchie to the Philadelphia Eagles, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Texans will get a fifth-round pick and tight end Harrison Bryant in exchange for Metchie and a sixth-round selection, Schefter adds.

Surprise! Dodgers in 2nd Place

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts didn't envision his club sitting in second place in the NL West in mid-August.

However, that's exactly where the Dodgers find themselves after losing 6-5 to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday to drop all six games of the Freeway Series this season. The defending World Series champions were the favorites to repeat after a huge offseason and led the division by nine games July 3, but they've gone 12-21 since to fall one game behind the San Diego Padres.

"We put ourselves in this spot," manager Dave Roberts said postgame, according to Sonja Chen of MLB.com. "But no, I wouldn't have expected us to be in second place right now."

Rashee Rice discipline hearing

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Sept. 30, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Rice will likely be able to play the first four weeks of the season before any potential discipline is imposed, Schefter adds.

The 25-year-old is facing a suspension after he and another speeding driver caused a chain-reaction car crash that injured multiple people in Dallas in 2024. Prosecutors said Rice fled on foot after the crash and didn't check on the people in the other vehicles. He pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of deferred probation.

Brewers 12 straight wins

William Contreras drove in four runs, Christian Yelich drove in three and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-5 on Wednesday to extend their winning streak to 12 games.

Boston Celtics sell for $6.1 Billion

The NBA on Wednesday unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by private equity mogul Bill Chisholm, a deal that values the franchise at more than $6.1 billion — the largest ever for an American professional sports team.

The league said the transaction is expected to close shortly. When it does, Chisholm will take ownership of at least 51% of the team, with full control coming by 2028 at a price that could bring the total value to $7.3 billion.

The previous record for a U.S. sports franchise was the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023. The record price for an NBA team was the $4 billion mortgage firm owner Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2023.

Padres sweep Giants

At the outset of play on July 4, the San Diego Padres were coming off a 2-4 trip through Cincinnati and Philadelphia and trailed the Los Angeles Dodgers by nine games in the National League West.

On Friday night, the Padres and Dodgers open a three-game series at Los Angeles with San Diego atop the division.

The Padres completed a three-game sweep of the host San Francisco Giants on Wednesday with an 11-1 romp that extended San Diego's winning streak to five games. The Padres also have won five straight series and are 23-12 since Independence Day.

Paul Goldschmidt may land on injured reserve

Paul Goldschmidt has a low-grade right knee sprain and the New York Yankees may place the veteran first baseman on the injured list ahead of his return to St. Louis this weekend.

The Yankees will evaluate Goldschmidt during their day off and will decide before Friday's game against the Cardinals if he will be placed on the IL.

"He's dealing with something so we'll see if it's an IL situation," manager Aaron Boone said after Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Minnesota. "He was pretty sore last night and this morning. Feels like he's doing quite a bit better right now so we'll see."

Jerry Jones beats stage 4 cancer

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed that he fought Stage 4 melanoma for a decade after being diagnosed in 2010.

"I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle (drug) called PD-1 (therapy)," Jones told Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday. "I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines."

Jones added: "I now have no tumors."
