The San Jose Sharks signed Sherwood to a five-year contract extension with an annual average value of $5.75 million, the team announced Wednesday.
The new deal for Sherwood, who was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, is a significant raise from his current $1.5-million cap hit. The Sharks acquired him from the Vancouver Canucks in January for a pair of second-round picks.
Sherwood has only played five games for San Jose, notching one goal and one assist. He scored 18 goals in 49 games for the Canucks this season.
