Pirates offer Kyle Schwarber huge contract

The Pittsburgh Pirates are pushing hard for one of this offseason's biggest prizes.

Pittsburgh has extended a four-year offer to star free-agent slugger Kyle Schwarber, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. While financial details of the offer aren't known, it's expected that it's worth well above $100 million, according to Rosenthal.

The news represents a stunning development for the notoriously tight-fisted Pirates. If they manage to land Schwarber, it would be the biggest free-agent deal in franchise history, easily surpassing Francisco Liriano's three-year, $39-million contract in 2015. Bryan Reynolds' eight-year, $106.75-million extension is the only nine-figure deal ever handed out by the Bucs.
